I’m Lexi, and I have been natural for almost 10 years now. I wanted to go natural way before the blogs, the YouTube videos, and the huge spike of women running to the salon to get their Big Chop on. It was 1996. I was in the 7th grade and obsessed with curly hair. Watching shows like “Saved By The Bell” with Lisa Turtle’s awesome curls and Denise on “The Cosby Show’s” long flowing curls started this unhealthy obsession! (which turned out to be a HEALTHY obsession).
I started getting relaxers at the age of 6. My mother was fed up with trying to manage my kinky hair and gave up the fight. Fast forward to middle school… I
noticed every time I waited beyond the 5 week mark to get a relaxer, my roots would curl up. I thought “Hmmm, I wonder what my hair would look like if I stop getting relaxers?” I decided to defy my mom and stop getting relaxers. I got pretty far in this transition and went as far as achieving about 3 inches of new growth. It didn’t last long though. But with the teasing from other students and pressure from my mother—I caved in. (If it was 2012, I’m sure I would have made it through!)
It wasn’t until college that I was in control of my own hair. I was in a new state and could care less what people thought of me. So all of the money my mom sent me to go to the salon to get a relaxer…I spent at the mall. At that moment I decided to go natural again. Why not? I knew this time it would work out because I was finally in control.
It’s been 9 years now, and I have never been happier. I relied on YouTube and forums to help me out along the way, and now I feel like I am an expert at MY hair. Going to blogs like this is what helped me discover how to take care of my hair and to learn what works best for me. I hope you are able to take away some valuable information from our posts – and of course, please let us know if you have any questions.
