Playing It Straight

Change is a woman’s prerogative.  So whether you’re relaxer-free or relaxer-loyal, if you choose to play it straight now and again, just be sure you also keep your strands healthy.  Your hair’s look is optional; its health isn’t.

With healthy strands in mind, Sofn’free GroHealthy has a lineup and regimen to make hair light-reflecting and eye-catching:

STEP #1: WASH and CONDITION with our Sulfate-free 2-in-1 Conditioning Shampoo (a great weekly shampoo), followed by our Really Deep Conditioning Treatment (you know, the creamy stuff that smells like cake batter and has that touch of menthol to stimulate the scalp). Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the conditioner evenly.  After a thorough rinse, squeeze away water using a microfiber towel or a t-shirt.

STEP #2: BLOW DRY WITH CARE, but first apply the Sofn’free GroHealthy Leave-In Treatment and comb it through gently.  This leave-in makes combing easier and adds a touch of hold. Make sure that you move the dryer and brush in tandem to prevent heat concentration on any one part of the strand for too long.  Otherwise, you’ll weaken the hair.

STEP #3: HEAT PROTECT AND FLATIRON, section by section. Scoop little dollops of Sofn’free GroHealthy Strengthening Crème and squeeze it throughout each section of hair.  This is a heat-protectant infused with shea butter to give hair massive shine, strength and flexibility.

STEP #4: FINISH with a light misting of the Sofn’free GroHealthy Argan & Olive Oil Nourishing Sheen Spray.  (And while you’re at it, treat your elbows and knees to a misting to eliminate that pesky ashy dryness.)

NIGHTTIME:  Before wrapping, setting or molding for the night, distribute a couple drops of Sofn’free GroHealthy Argan & Olive Oil Treatment throughout the hair.  Sleep with a satin wrap or bonnet, and always use a satin pillow cover.

DAYS FOLLOWING: As needed, reapply the Nourishing Sheen Spray to keep up the shine and prevent flyaways.

Remember: Whether you go straight or curly, always be sure to help it grow healthy.

Stocking Stuffers!

Today’s Black Woman Style Report magazine has great stocking stuffer ideas (and one of them is Sofn’free’s Really Deep Conditioning Treatment). HoHoHo!

Diary of the Hair Whisperer

The Hair Whisperer at work

To some people, the ability to hear hair conversing sounds intriguing, and it is.  However, to a Hair Whisperer, it is a blessing and a curse.

Imagine walking by groups of people and having to listen to the cries from heads of hair that have been mistreated and styled against their will — held captive by banana clips, misplaced bobby pins and slathered with grease.  It’s enough to make a grown man cry.

Sometimes I’m compelled to stop, introduce myself, and say, “I couldn’t help but overhear your hair.” Once they realize I do know what’s been done to their hair, we have a conversation.

Typically, I depend on the GroHealthy products from Sofn’free to demonstrate how to make their hair happy again.  The milk protein and olive oil formulas of these products work on all hair types: relaxed, transitioning and “straight relaxed” natural hair.  So, one line goes a long way in a series of hair chats.

I start out with the most basic need of hair:  to be clean. Not just clean to the eye, but clean down to the scalp.  Clean is good, but a healthy clean is better by far.  Naturally, I tell them about the sulfate-free moisturizing conditioning shampoo from Sofn’free GroHealthy. It allows a dry scalp to drink deeply from the rich mixture of select olives, milk proteins and essential fatty acids found in Omega 3.

That’s when I see that just starting this conversation with hair owners makes the hair itself start to feel more comfortable.  More times than I can remember, hair has breathed a deep sigh of relief and thanks that it’ll finally get the help it needs.

Sometimes I also often hear anxious, hushed whispers of from the hair saying, “Please tell her about conditioner.”  Without hesitation, I recommend the line’s Really Deep Conditioning Treatment and Leave-In Treatment.  Oh, how the strands dance with delight that this is what they’ll get next.

The hair owners and I often exchange email addresses and Twitter handles, promising postings on Sofn’free’s Facebook wall once they’ve tried the products.

For the times when I walk by happy hair, it’s a different story.  It practically sings to me about how well it is treated:  cleansed, nourished, hydrated and always styled gently.  Those are the strands that shine, while they sing loud and clear.

To find out more about how to make your hair sing, read about Sofn’free GroHealthy products at sofnfree.com.  And stop by Sofn’free’s on social media: Twitter.com/sofnfree and Facebook.com/sofnfree.  I’ll be there to listen.

Hair Fitness at Bronner Bros.

Grand prize winner Linette Battle (image courtesy of UnitedHealthcare)

The Bronner Brothers show is a huge draw for many reasons, but we had to give a shoutout to Linette Battle of Palm Beach, Florida. She won the grand prize in the 3rd annual “Hair Fitness” competition, which promotes styles that “facilitate healthy and fit African American women.” The contest, sponsored by UnitedHealthcare, included 50 showstopping competitors – all striving to create hairstyles that were easy to maintain that could help their clients make daily exercise less high-maintenance.

Stylists were judged on technical execution, originality, suitability and head contour, and new ideas. Contest categories included: low-impact workout (little to no sweat and requires only one shampoo/condition per week); moderate-impact workout (modest sweat and requires 1-2 shampoo and conditions per week); and high-impact (profuse sweating and requires 2-3 shampoo/conditions per week).

Keep up the great work ladies!

One Word About Golden Gabby’s Hair: Relax.

What a gal, this 16-year-old Gabby Douglas. She won two Olympic gold medals in gymnastics and so many of our hearts this summer – all while unwittingly adding a new dimension to the widespread and sometimes divisive conversations about natural and relaxed textured hair.

What started with snide comments on Twitter about the way Gabby styled her hair during competition caused Team Natural and Team Relaxed to unite in her defense.  How great was that to see?

Photo via http://glmr.me/OOoRPR

If you don’t know already, Gabby apparently has her hair chemically relaxed to make it easier to slick back tight, so it won’t cause distraction to her while training and competing.   However, her choice to relax didn’t deter Team Natural from shooting down any critics of Golden Gabby.  Of course not.  Who wouldn’t defend her?  The beauty of relaxed versus natural is that there’s a choice.  Some women and girls “join” one team, some “join” the other.  And some change from one camp to the other.  It’s hair.

So there she was in London, adhering to the local Keep Calm and Carry On motto, and she responded with spunk and grace to the criticisms spewed her way.  She pulled back her hair, won some Olympic bling, and is now headed home to Virginia Beach with her mother.

My thoughts?  Gabby’s hair is just fine.  Period.

Why would anyone make a public and negative comment about a girl’s hair if that very girl in question was doing anything other than participating in a hair competition?

I’m not saying that Gabby earned her right to wear her hair because she was earning her way to Olympic history.  I’m saying Gabby should wear her hair how she wants, because she’s a living, breathing human being.  She happens to be a very cute and accomplished human being with a lot more than hair on her mind, but that’s beside the point.

I hope that when Gabby starts her 40-city “Tour of Champions” series around America that her hair is never once mentioned in the press or at the events.  That her flips on the mat and in the air are the focus, not hair gel and barrettes.

I can’t wait until she and her teammates come to Atlanta.  I’ll be there yelling, “Here, here,” not “Hair, hair” to Miss Gabby the Olympian.

Naturally Judged?

There are a few things about me that are not secrets; I am natural, I straighten my hair and I don’t care. Although I never considered the fact that straightening my hair makes me less natural, I found out after a trip to the beauty salon it does! At least to some people.

Living in Atlanta has its pros and cons. The largest con if you a woman with natural hair is the humidity. Some days upon stepping outside I can feel my hair swell up. If you are natural you know the  feeling. You immediately know that whatever ”look” you perfected in your bathroom mirror is no longer cute.

Being that this is my second natural summer, I had a game plan. I got a sew-in! Which in fact saved my look and hair. I only have a small part of my hair out and the virgin hair doesn’t go crazy when I step outside. After a recent trip to the hair salon to get my extensions washed and straightened, I ran into an old natural hair friend.  The first thing she says to me is, “Oh so you aren’t natural anymore?” I was shocked – I told her I was. She proceeded to tell me that if I wanted to wear my hair straight, I should have kept my relaxer.

So ladies I ask you this, where is the “So you want to be NATURAL” rule book? Why am I less natural because I can appreciate a good straightening from time to time? Why does everything have to be a competition? We need to support each other on this natural hair journey. My hair is just as healthy as the next naturalista and I like to be versatile. So I said it before and I will say it again.

There are a few things about me that are not secrets; I am natural, I straighten my hair and I don’t care.
